Georgia Deep Woods Deer Fest: March (Threatte Center)

This first Saturday in March event started in Lakeland in 2005 in the community’s effort to raise funds for re-locating and renovating the old Lanier County school auditorium for use as a community center. The first Georgia Deep Woods Deer Fest was a hit and attracted huge crowds in the years that have followed. Wildlife displays, hunting and fishing equipment, the sumptuous wild game supper, music, and auction of firearms and hunting equipment are all part of the days agenda. Deer Fest’s highlight? The giveaway drawing for more than 50 shotguns and rifles. Deer Fest generated the funds for the auditorium project. The old structure was cut into four parts and moved through downtown Lakeland on a Sunday afternoon to a new site in February 2006. Locals turned out in huge numbers to watch “The Big Move.” The auditorium was put back together, renovated and opened the next year.
